A major earthquake in New Zealand has long been anticipated. But it comes from an unexpected quarter, spelling the fall of civilisations worldwide. An asteroid takes astronomers by surprise, coming from above the plane of the ecliptic and breaking apart, striking the Northern hemisphere in three major impacts. The ensuing firestorms, air pressure waves, and seismic waves inflict unprecedented damage. Even in far off New Zealand this triggers earthquakes and volcanic activity with mass casualties.
Peadair Walker heads an organisation that provides combat and military engineering support in trouble spots worldwide. Returning to his base in the Hutt Valley, after the first earthquake has flattened Wellington city, he learns that this has been a worldwide phenomenon. Foreseeing the downfall of urban civilisation, he organises his staff for a migration to farmland on the Wairarapa plains. However, his head of Security, Aaron Bryant, feels impelled to walk to Wellington city in search of his wife and small son.
Russell Smith, Captain of a local Chapter of the Hell Hounds motorcycle club, is shaken awake after a hard night’s drinking. Soon, he too recognises the implications for survival and organises his group for a mass exodus, pillaging for provisions along the way.
Marcia Porter and her flatmate David are university students in Wellington. They flee the smoking city on bicycles and make somewhat better time than those migrating on foot.
Their paths cross in various ways, and the ensuing power struggles lead to an escalating series of conflicts as each group strives to ensure their long-term survival. This story is one record of the effects of a global catastrophe. A gritty, switched-on first novel, it is often violent and uncompromising, but always highly authentic, literate and witty.

I bought this book, because one I like reading post-apocalyptic books into it was based in the country I live in, New Zealand. I originally posted a review about this book, as I started it, couldn't finish it and I thought it was going to be a very predictable. I got contacted by the author ( which I didn't mind and actually appreciated), whom challenged me one to one day re-pick it up and finish. And to be honest, I am pleased he did. I finished the book at 4:00am this morning. This book is a really great story, and one of those books that I couldn't put down - a real page turner. There was no major twists and turns, however if you like PA books you need to read it.The author mentioned there was a second book which I cannot wait for> And I am so pleased that it didn't end on a cliffhanger ( like most authors tend to do these days). I will be first in line to buy book because it's a very good journey.

Embers in the Chaos The TKO Chronicles Volume 1 eBook Hugh Dodwell Reviews
Very enjoyable. Hugh Dodwell writes a good story. Read it and then let's pressure him to finish #2.
Looking forward to the next book. It is worth the read. It's a very well written book and worth the money
The fall of civilization has come to us again and fans of the genre will recognize much of what happens. The story takes it time devolving characters and the world they live in.
How much of my enjoyment comes from being able to envision my home town as it struggles though this, I not sure but I look forward to seeing how later books progress the story, as this is clearly more aiming to build a larger story than provide a culmination
Looking forward to the next instalment. New Zealand after the end...most of the rest of the world done in by a meteor and now the survivalists bring their skills forward in forging a new place of safety. If you like this kind of post-apocalyptic story, this is a good one. References to some things arcane to New Zealand, but hey, if most of North America get obliterated then the story would take place there now wouldn't it? Just watch out for the Hell Hounds......
Loved this book! The characters are believable, well crafted and full of interesting quirks. The authors descriptive ability shines amongst the best. I truly felt like I was there watching the story play out scene my scene. So much happens in this story that it will keep you riveted from page one thru till the page ends. I cannot wait until book two is out. Already I have many possible scenarios running thru my head but I bet you, that in the end, I'm wrong. That's one of the talents this author has, surprises around every corner. One thing that surprised me was that I really really liked Russell Smith. I certainly hope that he redeems himself, escapes the choice he's made in life, and is able to join the "good guys".
